Route 2 runs along the southern edge of Joplin, leading west 10 miles (16 km) to Chester, the Liberty county seat, and east 50 miles (80 km) to Havre.Īccording to the United States Census Bureau, the Joplin CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.3 km 2), of which 0.03 square miles (0.07 km 2), or 2.20%, are water.

It is bordered to the east by Inverness in Hill County. Three people were killed and 50 more were injured when the eight rear cars of the ten-car train derailed. On September 25, 2021, at approximately 3:55 p.m., Amtrak passenger train 7/27, also known as the westbound Empire Builder, suffered a derailment 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Joplin while en route from Chicago to Seattle.
